Publishers and booksellers have discussed, together with Luis González, Director of the Germán Sánchez Ruipérez Foundation, the new realities and opportunities in the publishing world. Jordi Nadal, Director of the independent publisher Plataforma; Paulo Cosín, Editorial Director of Ediciones Morata and Luis Solano, publisher and founder of Libros del Asteroide (Grupo Contexto), analyzed the technological changes and new reading habits which they had to adapt to. The pandemic has been another challenge for them. The meeting took place in the Public Municipal Library Eugenio Trías, in Madrid.
After highlighting the relevant role of Spain as an editorial power at Frankfurt, and the importance of looking for new spaces as Guest of Honor during the 2022 edition, they claimed the need for a State Agreement to promote reading. Participants also agreed to maintain the fixed prices structure and the creation of helping policies for the editorial sector and bookshops, in particular.
The future of the sector, according to the attendants, means knowing the environment, using technological innovation and getting advantage of the reading and selling indexes that the pandemic brought within.
“Time, talent and resources are the engines that vertebrate our work. To Frankfurt Book Fair you shall go eager to work, a very focused gaze and always trusting on your talent”.Jordi Nadal
“As editors, we cannot live isolated, we must work together to be visible. We must be efficient because the benefit edges are shortened, and new technologies are our allies: on-demand printing, shortening the deadlines or data analysis”.Paulo Cosín
“There are so many different ways to access books. The reader alternatives, and the information, are wider than ever, and that makes the role of the editor as brand creator much more important every time, contrary that might be believed”.Luis Solano
“We have to define a new narrative for the book sector. Our identity sign is how we work with the content. Demonstrate our absolute leadership against the main platforms thanks to our labour”.Luis González
