Diego Fernández Jiménez

Director of the Instituto de Cultura Gitana

Diego Fernández Jiménez (Aguilar de la Frontera, Córdoba, 1961) is a graduate in Law and has worked as a lawyer since 1985. He has published the essays Libertad de residencia y derecho a la libertad: derechos del detenido en las comisarías de policía o guardia civil (Unión Romaní, 1992) and Situación y perspectivas de la juventud gitana en Europa (Instituto Romanò de Servicios Sociales y Culturales, 1996). He has contributed to publications such as Información y asesoramiento a los vendedores ambulantes (Instituto Romanò de Servicios Sociales y Culturales, 1997) and Basis of gypsy thought (Instituto Romanò de Servicios Sociales y Culturales, 2001). In 2022 he publishes Cuando late el silencio. La España gitana (Ocho y Medio).

He has been the vice-president of the Spanish Romani Union, a member of the European Roma Rights Centre and has held a number of institutional posts as councillor and deputy mayor in the City Council of Aguilar de la Frontera, Córdoba, in 1987-1988 and 1999-2003, as well as being Cultural Advisor to the Presidency of the Deputation of Cordoba.

In 2005 he was elected as one of the Spanish representatives in the European Roma and Travellers Forum (ERTF) of the Council of Europe, based in Strasbourg. Since 2007 he has been the director of the Instituto de Cultura Gitana.
