Sergio Vila-Sanjuán

Journalist and writer

Sergio Vila-Sanjuán (Barcelona, 1957) is a journalist and a novelist. He graduated in History from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) and holds a Master’s degree in Liberal Arts from Boston University. He is currently editor of the “Cultura/s” supplement of La Vanguardia.

He has written about the history of Spanish publishing in Pasando página (Destino, 2003) and various aspects of the book world in El síndrome de Frankfurt (RBA, 2007), Código best seller (Temas de hoy, 2011) and Otra Cataluña (Destino, 2018). His journalism has been gathered together in Crónicas culturales (Debolsillo, 2004), La cultura y la vida (Libros de Vanguardia, 2013) and Una crónica del periodismo cultural (UAB, 2015).

In 2010 he published his first novel, Una heredera de Barcelona (Destino). It was followed by Estaba en el aire (Destino, 2013), which received the Nadal Prize; and El informe Casabona (Destino, 2017). 

He is also author of the plays El club de la escalera (Plataforma Editorial, 2014) and La agente literaria (2018).

He was appointed commissioner for the 2005 Year of Books and Reading and is member of the Real Academia de Buenas Letras de Barcelona. In 2020 he received the National Cultural Journalism Prize granted by the Ministry of Culture and Sport, and the José Luis Giménez-Frontín Prize from the Asociación Colegial de Escritores de Cataluña (ACEC).

Recently he published El joven Porcel. Una ascensión literaria en la Barcelona de los años sesenta (Destino, 2021).

He has collected his journalism in Crónicas culturales (Debolsillo, 2004), La cultura y la vida (Libros de Vanguardia, 2013) and Una crónica del periodismo cultural (Edicions Universitat Barcelona, 2015).

Recently he published the biography El joven Porcel (Destino, 2021).
