We need your Spilling Creativity

From 20 to 31 January the call for tenders is open for the selection of the interior design project, exhibition proposal and management of assembly and dismantling of the Spain Pavilion, Guest of Honour of the Frankfurt Book Fair 2022, which will take place in the German city from 19 to 23 October.

The aim of this process, carried out by Acción Cultural Española (AC/E), is to choose the project that will represent our country by selecting a proposal that is not only in line with the slogan Creatividad Desbordante and the strategic pillars of the general programme, but also innovative, original, creative and sustainable.

The Guest of Honour has a space of 1,500-2,000 square metres on the fairgrounds, separate from the professional stands, to build its pavilion and programme activities. The Fair receives an average of 50,000 to 70,000 visitors per day (pre-2020 data), including professional visitors during the week (booksellers, journalists, publishers, etc.) and general visitors at the weekend. In 2021, the Canadian pavilion, Guest of Honour at that edition, welcomed 17,000 visitors, despite limited seating capacity due to the pandemic.

The Frankfurt Book Fair is not only the world’s most important platform for the exhibition and purchase of book rights, but also a key cultural event, with nearly 3,000 events (round tables, readings, debates, exhibitions, etc.) covered by 10,000 journalists from 75 countries.

Spain’s participation as Guest of Honour will take place 31 years after its participation in 1991. The programme of activities is not limited to the fair, but is an incentive to present Spain and our culture in Germany. It is an event with a double objective: to highlight the value of the book sector, from those who write, translate, publish or read, and to show the country that Spain has become after these three decades in cultural, social and economic terms.

The Frankfurt Book Fair lasts five days, three of which are reserved for professionals in the sector and two for the general public. During this time, the image of the Guest of Honour is visible at the most prominent points of the city.

The fundamental objectives of our presence as Guest of Honour are to show the strength of Spanish culture represented in the book sector and to improve knowledge abroad of Spanish literature (in all the official languages of the country), which is experiencing one of the most interesting moments in its recent history with sustained growth in domestic consumption and exports.

The deadline for receipt of nominations is 31 January. On 15 February, the jury of specialists will publish a list of the five finalists who will move on to the second phase. The final decision will take place on 21 April.
